Baseera Foundation for the Visually Impaired

Baseera is an Egyptian nonprofit founded in 2004 by Doaa Mabrouk and her mother, Dr. Sawsan El Messieri with the aim of empowering and enabling visually-impaired people realise their abilities and become independent and productive individuals in an accepting society. Baseera does eye screening in schools, operates mobile clinics to perform operations and provide glasses to those in need. It also helps adapt school curriculums and teaching materials for visually-impaired students, carries out research about visual impairment in Egypt, and runs various advocacy programmes at a government and local level to promote awareness and integration.

Programmes

  • Advocacy
    Baseera works with government entities and local councils to develop and implement inclusive policies for those with disabilities and visual impairments. It also works with other international partners and local NGOs to advocate and raise awareness about eye health and intervention through campaigns and training targeting government workers, school employers, and health professionals.
  • Education
    Baseera works to integrate students with visual impairments into mainstream schools. It does this through various interventions including: adapting curriculums and teaching methods; providing specialised educational material (e.g. raised maps and shapes); using technologies to support visually-impaired students; and offering individual support for students.
  • Health
    Baseera does eye screening in screenings in schools and takes mobile clinics to reach people in their communities. It performs eye surgeries and distributes glasses to those in need.
  • Research
    Baseera supports qualitative and quantitative research that highlights key facts and figures regarding the number of visually impaired in Egypt and their classifications, the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals and their communities, the types of social services provided and quality of medical support etc.
  • Training
    The organisation provides specialist training about visual impairment for parents, school teachers, and health professionals, explaining how to deal with and support people who are visually impaired, and understand each type of disability and the challenges that come with it.
